Ever since iPhone announced that users had downloaded over a billion apps in only eighteen months from their app site , every smartphone maker on the planet has been desperately trying to catch up. Six months later, the report that users had downloaded another billion iPhone apps, added even more fuel to the fire.

As an industry, apps are currently one of the most profitable on the internet, with rumours that the makers of the iPhone (Apple Inc.) made over a billion dollars on apps alone last year. And what did they have to do for that billion? Not much. The company simply purchased programs from app makers and paid them a healthy licensing fee of seventy per cent. Then they offered the apps for sale on their website.

For obvious reasons, a low risk, low maintenance steady stream of income is not something any company with means and opportunity can conceivably turn their backs on.
